Before Day 1

How to Reach Varanasi

Here's how most visitors get into the city before this itinerary starts.

✈️

By Air

Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS) is about 25 km from the ghats, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other major cities. A pre-booked cab into the city takes roughly 45–60 minutes.

🚆

By Train

Varanasi Junction (Varanasi Cantt) is the main station, well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Lucknow. Varanasi City and Banaras stations are smaller alternatives closer to the old city.

🚗

By Road

Varanasi sits on NH19, connected to Prayagraj (~120 km, 2.5–3 hrs) and Ayodhya (~200 km, 4–5 hrs) — worth knowing if you're combining this trip with either city.

Arriving by train or flight? We can arrange the pickup so Day 1 starts on time — book an airport/station transfer.

D1

Day 1 — Boat Ride, Temples & Ganga Aarti

Stay close to the ghats today — everything is within walking distance

🌅
6:00 AM

Sunrise Boat Ride on the Ganges

Start early with a rowboat ride along the ghats. This is the quietest, most photogenic part of the day — you'll watch the city wake up, priests set up for morning rituals, and the sun rise over the eastern bank.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple
8:00 AM

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Head to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Mornings are busy but move faster than evenings — go straight from the boat ride to beat the bigger afternoon crowds.

🙏
9:30 AM

Annapurna Devi Temple & Vishalakshi Temple

Both sit a short walk from Kashi Vishwanath, so cover them back-to-back before heading back for breakfast.

🍳
10:30 AM

Breakfast & Rest

Try a local breakfast joint near the temple lanes — kachori-sabji and lassi are Varanasi staples. Use the midday break to freshen up at your hotel.

Ghat Walking Tour
3:30 PM

Ghat Walking Tour

Walk the ghats south to north — Dashashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, and as many of the smaller ghats as time allows. Each has its own character, from the cremation rituals at Manikarnika to the crowds at Dashashwamedh.

Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat
6:30 PM / 7:00 PM

Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat

The evening river-worship ceremony — 6:30 PM in winter, 7:00 PM in summer. Arrive 45 minutes early for ghat-side seating, or book a boat for a view from the water.

🛍️
Night

Vishwanath Gali & Dinner

Browse the narrow market lane for brassware, sweets, and souvenirs before dinner at a nearby restaurant.

D2

Day 2 — Temples, Sarnath & Local Markets

A wider loop today, including the half-day trip out to Sarnath

Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple
7:00 AM

Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple

Start the day with a quieter darshan before the wider city wakes up.

🍛
8:30 AM

Local Breakfast

Kachauri-sabji and jalebi from a local stall — a Varanasi morning tradition worth building into the schedule rather than rushing past.

🏛️
10:00 AM

Sarnath — Where Buddha Taught

A 30–40 minute drive from the city centre. Visit the Dhamek Stupa, the Sarnath Archaeological Museum, and the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar monastery. Budget at least 2 hours here.

🎓
1:00 PM

BHU Campus & New Vishwanath Temple

On the way back, stop at the Banaras Hindu University campus and the marble New Kashi Vishwanath Temple inside it — usually far less crowded than the old-city temple.

🧵
3:30 PM

Banarasi Sarees & Silk Shopping

Varanasi is famous for handwoven Banarasi silk — worth an hour even if you're only browsing.

🌇
5:30 PM

Assi Ghat at Sunset

End the trip at Assi Ghat, one of the more relaxed ghats, popular for its evening atmosphere and riverside cafés.

🚗
Evening

Departure

Head back to your hotel to collect luggage, or straight to the station/airport if you're leaving the same night.

Want Day 2 arranged for you?

Sarnath cab, guide and hotel checkout timing — sorted.

Make It Yours

Tailor This Itinerary to How You're Traveling

The schedule above is the default — here's how travelers usually adjust it.

💑

Traveling as a Couple

Swap the group boat ride for a private one at sunset instead of sunrise — quieter, and pairs well with the Ganga Aarti right after. Book a room with a ghat-facing view for Day 1.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Traveling with Family / Kids

Push the boat ride to 7 AM instead of 6 AM — easier with children, and the light is still good. Skip the Banarasi silk shopping stop on Day 2 in favor of extra rest time.

🎒

On a Tight Budget

Use shared boats and shared cabs throughout (see the Budget section below), stay at a 3-star hotel near the ghats to cut cab costs, and skip the optional local guide.

🧘

Solo Traveler

Hire a local guide just for Day 1's ghat walk and boat ride — it's the easiest way to meet other travelers and get context on what you're seeing, and worth it even on a tight budget.

📸

Photography-Focused

Prioritize the 6 AM boat ride and the Ganga Aarti — the two best light conditions of the day. Consider adding a second, shorter boat ride at sunset on Day 2 near Assi Ghat.

👴

Traveling with Elderly Parents

The old-city lanes involve real walking on uneven stone steps — budget extra time, and consider a wheelchair-accessible boat (ask when booking) if mobility is a concern.

Getting Around

Old City (Day 1)

The ghats, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and the surrounding lanes are pedestrian-only — no cabs or autos can enter. Plan to walk, and wear footwear you can slip on and off easily for temple visits.

Sarnath & BHU (Day 2)

These are outside the old city and need a cab or auto — Sarnath is roughly 30–40 minutes each way from the ghats area.

Need a cab for both days?

Book one driver for the full trip — no re-negotiating fares.

Budget Breakdown (Per Person)

Rough ranges for planning — actual cost depends on group size and how much you negotiate boat/cab fares.

Category Budget Comfortable
Hotel (1 night) ₹800 – ₹1,500 ₹2,500 – ₹5,000
Sunrise boat ride ₹200 – ₹400 (shared) ₹600 – ₹1,000 (private)
Local cab / auto (2 days) ₹600 – ₹1,000 ₹1,500 – ₹2,500
Sarnath entry + museum ₹45 ₹45
Food (2 days) ₹500 – ₹800 ₹1,200 – ₹2,000
Local guide (optional) ₹500 – ₹800 ₹1,000 – ₹1,500

What to Pack & Temple Etiquette

Packing checklist

  • Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees
  • Slip-on footwear — you'll remove shoes often
  • A light shawl or scarf for temple visits
  • Sunscreen and a cap for the boat ride
  • Cash in small denominations for ghat vendors and boats
  • A power bank — long days, lots of photos

Temple etiquette

  • Leather items (belts, bags) aren't allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath Temple
  • Photography is restricted in the inner sanctum of most temples
  • Remove footwear before stepping onto temple premises
  • Manikarnika Ghat is an active cremation site — photography there is considered disrespectful
  • Dress modestly at the ghats, not just inside temples

Unsure what to pack?

Ask us — we'll tell you what past travelers wished they'd brought.

Local Logistics

💵

Currency & ATMs

ATMs are common around the old city and near the ghats, but many small ghat-side vendors and boatmen are cash-only. Carry small denominations — breaking a ₹500 note on a ghat is often difficult.

📶

Connectivity

Airtel and Jio have the strongest coverage in the old city. A local SIM or an international roaming pack both work fine — data speeds drop in the narrowest lanes near Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

💧

Water & Food Safety

Stick to bottled or filtered water, and eat at stalls with visible turnover (busy stalls cook fresh, constantly). This itinerary's breakfast stops are chosen partly for this reason.

🚨

Emergency Contacts

UP Tourist Police helpline: 1364. Ambulance: 108. Police: 100. Save these before you start Day 1 — signal can be patchy in the narrowest ghat lanes.

Any other logistics question?

SIM cards, safety, anything — just ask.

FAQ — Varanasi 2 Days Itinerary

Is 2 days enough for Varanasi?
Yes — 2 days covers the essentials well: the main ghats, a sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the evening Ganga Aarti, and a half-day trip to Sarnath. Add Ayodhya or Prayagraj and you'll want 3–4 days instead.
What is the best route to follow?
Keep Day 1 in the old city, close to the river — the boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath, ghats, and evening Aarti are all within walking distance of each other. Save Day 2 for the sites that need transport, like Sarnath and BHU.
Can I do this itinerary without a guide?
Yes, every stop is open to independent travelers. A guide isn't essential, but many visitors hire one just for the ghat walk and boat ride to get context on the history and rituals.
How much walking is involved?
A fair amount — the old city and ghats are pedestrian-only, so expect 4–6 km of walking across the two days. Comfortable, easy-to-remove footwear helps.
What's the best time of year for this itinerary?
October to March, when temperatures stay in a comfortable 15–25°C range. November's Dev Diwali is one of the most spectacular times to see the ghats. Avoid May–June, when daytime heat regularly crosses 40°C.
What should I wear when visiting temples?
Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, slip-on footwear, and no leather belts or bags at Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
What are the must-visit places in a 2-day trip?
Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat, the evening Ganga Aarti, a sunrise boat ride, and Sarnath. Everything else — Annapurna Devi Temple, Manikarnika Ghat, BHU, local markets — adds depth but these five are the non-negotiables.
Is Varanasi safe for solo travelers?
Yes, Varanasi is well used to solo travelers and the ghats stay busy well into the evening. Agree on boat and cab fares upfront, keep valuables secure in crowded areas, and avoid isolated riverfront stretches late at night.
Which ghat should I not miss?
Dashashwamedh Ghat for the Ganga Aarti, and Manikarnika Ghat for a firsthand look at Varanasi's cremation rituals. Assi Ghat is worth adding for a calmer, more local atmosphere.
Can I try street food during this itinerary?
Yes — both breakfast stops in this itinerary (kachori-sabji, jalebi, lassi) are built around local street food, best found in the lanes near Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Vishwanath Gali.
How do I reach Varanasi to start this itinerary?
By air via Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS), by train via Varanasi Junction, or by road on NH19 — about 120 km from Prayagraj and 200 km from Ayodhya if you're combining cities.
Where should I stay for this itinerary?
Near the ghats or the old-city temple lanes — Day 1 is almost entirely on foot in that area, so a nearby hotel saves significant cab time.
Is tap water safe to drink in Varanasi?
No — stick to bottled or filtered water throughout, including for brushing your teeth. Most hotels and restaurants serve bottled water by default.
Can this itinerary be done during monsoon?
Yes, but expect adjustments — the sunrise boat ride may be shortened or cancelled in heavy rain, and ghat steps get slippery. October to March remains the more predictable window.
What are ATMs and currency like on this route?
Common in the old city, but ghat-side vendors and boatmen are typically cash-only and rarely carry change for large notes — carry small denominations before Day 1 starts.
